Koko Head Crater & Kaimana Beach - Hawaii Kai, O’ahu

I wasn’t sure why our friends insisted we stuff ourselves at two distinctly fulfilling establishments, but the Koko Head hike was elucidating. We make it to the bottom of an açaí bowl only to find ourselves at the bottom of a bigger bowl than we were prepared to handle.

A stunning staircase to a breathtaking view. (Photo borrowed from http://www.revealhawaii.com/2015/05/07/koko-head-stairs-stairs-of-doom-koko-crater-railway-trail/)

It seems we opted out of the stairway to heaven due to the hefty fine and took the stairway to hell instead.

The view from the pillbox is almost worth it, and the cool breeze at the top that offsets the humid sun is definitely worth it.

Hike up a little further for another breathtaking view when your quads stop screaming.

A staircation for sure, and a humbling experience overall. We got lapped by a local, and someone else passed us in a flimsy pair of flip flops. Still, it’s a great start to Honolulu, and everything can only get easier from here.

We refuel at the nearest gas station. Guzzle all the water we were arrogant not to carry, and a block of Butter Mochi puts some feeling back into my legs. This stuff is like crack. A mochi log with butter that creates crisp, grainy pockets of savory air.

Next Is a chill-out on Kaimana Beach. The water is like newly-melted ice, but I bet it feels refreshing after the Koko Head ordeal.

Mountains in one direction and open sea in the other. I could get used to this.
