Middle Island Cup - Middle Island, Hong Kong

There's nothing on this island except a yacht club, and there's no way over except in a boat unless you're an ambitious swimmer.

The RHKYC is hosting a dragon boat race, and I'm told it may be the most Hong Kong thing to do.

We get up a little later, just in time to catch the last race, a longer one circling the entire island.

Plenty of team spirit, clubs and corporate alike compete.
This race fits 20 in a boat, and there's one to drum and one to steer. The drummer's sense of balance is impressive.

RHKYC, which may be the longest actively used acronym in existence, sweeps the podium - these guys don't play.

There's free Peroni beer, thanks to some sponsors, and it pairs well with the ocean breeze.

Watching the oars synch rhythmically to the beat of the drums over a deejay and beer is the highlight of this trip.
This just might be the best thing we did in Hong Kong.
