Lambs of Sheep Street - Stratford-Upon-Avon, UK

Somewhere between the birth and death of Shakespeare, we have to stop for lunch. Lambs is a higher-end choice and if my experience is any indication, it's probably one of the better choices in town. Situated in one of the oldest buildings in Stratford, this restaurant is an undeniably beautiful two-story Tudor where the warm wooden slats give it the look of a homey tavern.

You can't sit in Stratford-Upon-Avon and not try this beer. The Shakespeare Brewing Co. makes an even-tempered Tempest Golden Ale, a smooth and refreshing pint.

The starters are some of the prettiest I've seen, a succulent Gratin of Hand-dived Scallops. They're served inside their exquisite shells with accents of orange and rosemary butter.

I believe these are fried smelt, but don't quote me on that. These small fish taste fresh-caught, and the frying gives them a tender texture and a barely briny finish.

The Cornish Crab Scotch Egg comes out soft-boiled, an easy yolk with whites binding crab and a crispy crust. It doesn't look like much on a plate, but get it with another starter and you've got yourself a meal.

The Herb-Crusted Rack of New Season English Lamb has to be my main. The place is called Lambs after all. The lamb is pretty in pink with an herb crust, pliable pieces of meat sending small rivers of juice into the green beans and flavoring a creamy stack of Dauphinoise potato.

A lovely lunch, a warm shelter from the rain. The food is rich for when you're craving something hearty and filling, but they also serve market-fresh seafood if you're looking for something less. I don't know much about the other dining options in Stratford-Upon-Avon, but I am quite satisfied with Lambs of Sheep Street, and I couldn't want anything more.
