First meal in the industrious, industrial city of Birmingham. My cousin has warned me that the food isn't much to write home about.
I disagree. It's not The Ledbury, and it's not a Parisian cafe, but it's enjoyable all the same. Plus they have all my favorites, and they do a pretty good job making them.
There is nothing I love more than Shrimp Hargow, and although the wrapper falls apart fast, it’s chewy crystal and holds together for a respectable amount of time.
The Pork Shumai are a close second. They're basically dense, savory ground pork cupcakes, and I love them.
Char Siu Bao are a heavy classic. Unfortunately this one has a higher bun:filling ratio than it should.
The Beef Tripe is a bit chewy but it’s fine. The sauce is not so soy. A bit different but in a good way.
I've never had Fried Pork Intestine like this before. The outside turns crispy while the inside stays soft and oozes liquid fat. It’s a positive experience if you’re prepared to chew.
The best part of the meal is the Boba option. They make fantastic teas next door, and this restaurant will bring it right to your table. Both are sweet and delicious. The Matcha is rich, and the Panda is cookies n' cream.
Casual fun at Ken Ho. Birmingham is a city on the upswing if their dim sum is any indication.
