You know you’ve had a great weekend when you have a 5-star brunch one day and a 4-star brunch the next and then you fly out to Costa Rica the next day. Union was brunch #2 and 3rd of the 4 Aquitaine group restaurants I’ve visited. I didn’t expect much after Metropolis, but I was pleasantly surprised by Union.
Eggs benedict: In my opinion, there is no adequate substitute for the smoky Canadian bacon that flavors this classic hangover cure, and spinach/salmon/whatever other healthier bastardized option is as unforgivable as faking it. Union recreates this classic favorite exactly the way it should be made: the eggs are nicely poached, the hollandaise is creamy but tangy, and the chef manages to use the exact right quantity of all the ingredients so the flavors blend and balance perfectly.
Chorizo omelet: generous amount of thinly sliced sausage with a hint of scallion to balance the richness. The sourdough toast is just hollandaise on the benedict (icing on the cake).
4 stars for affordable prices, good classic food, and a must-come-back-with-friends-for-drinks ambiance.
