Nighthawk: Breakfast Bar - Venice

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. In fact, people who eat breakfast are less likely to be overweight. People who eat breakfast lose weight more successfully. Blahblahblah. The statistics will beat you over the head on every form of social media and every damn health/fitness blog, and they are impossible to ignore.

Well if breakfast always tasted like Nighthawk, then maybe I wouldn't skip it so much. But I'm pretty sure it wouldn't help. Because although Nighthhawk does serve the most important and BEST meal of the day, it does so with a giant dollop of luxury and a ton of talent.

Even my drink is irresistible; the Bougie Coupe may be the most glamorous mimosa spin-off I've ever had. Pisco makes it strong, elderflower liquer makes it sweet, lemon juice keeps it light, and strawberry jam is my jam. It's surprisingly well-balanced with the citrus, and the drink finishes cohesive with just the right touch of sweetness. Add some bubbly goodness, and there is no way you don't fall in love.

The Chicken & Biscuits will be my undoing. They go from menu-to-mouth in minutes, the dense, filling comfort-food they're meant to be. But this classic has some unexpected elements of sophistication. The fried chicken is perfect, but the biscuits assert their own herbed cheddar flavor under a warm sausage gravy, made extra-savory by the bacon. It went down the hatch even quicker than that drink. Guess this one flew the (Bougie) Coupe...(GROAN).

The Purple Haze is mysterious and dark. The potatoes are soft, and the duck confit is fatty. The duck egg is a little more pungent than and carries some extra oomph, and it pulls the hash together.

The Candied Bacon Breakfast Burger...just wow. Yeah, I get it. It's quality and it's grass-fed beef so the patty is going to be infallible, but they cook it just right, and there is a well-balanced, heavy-but-not-overwhelming mix of cold, bitter arugula with warm, gooey white truffle cheese and a sunny-fried-up egg. The crispy potato strings keep add a satisfying crunch, and the candied bacon is to be savored sweetly. It's a bit heavy for a traditional breakfast, but I swear it's top 5 on my best burgers list.

Breakfast may be the most important meal of the day, but if you're stuffing your face at Nighthawk...and let's face it, how could you not...the most important activity of the day will be the 50 miles you run to burn it off. You can't have these dishes of decadence without the guilt, but wow, it's been a while since I've found a place that's so worth it!
